A Poker Primer

A Poker Primer

poker

Poker is a game of chance, but it is also a game of skill and psychology. While it is easy to learn the basic rules of poker and how to play it, the psychology and betting involved add another level of skill. This primer is meant to be a basic guide to the game, but you can read more about it in books or learn by playing with a group of people who know how to play the game.

All-in

All-in poker is a betting strategy in which a player goes all in when his or her chips are low. In these situations, a player’s effective stack is the only important number. If the player’s stack is too small, he or she is at risk of losing all of his chips.

Big blind

The big blind is the designated amount that a player in a poker game must post. Typically, this amount is posted by a player who is in the second position clockwise from the dealer. If a new player joins a game that is already underway, he or she must post the big blind, which increases after every timed round.

Gutshot

The Gutshot Poker Club was a poker club, bar, and internet cafe located on Clerkenwell Road in London. It opened in March 2004 and closed in 2007. It was founded by Barry Martin and Derek Kelly.

Five of a kind

A five of a kind poker hand is the highest possible hand in a game of poker. It consists of four of a kind cards and a wild card. This combination is worth more than a royal flush, but it is not as valuable as a straight flush. A common example of a five of a kind is a hand consisting of A-A-A-K-2 in the Five-Card Draw variation of poker. Wild cards in this version include deuces, Jokers, and one-eyed Jacks.

Straight flush

In poker, a Straight Flush is a hand of five consecutive cards of the same suit. It is also known as a Wheel, which means “seven cards in a row.” However, most poker games do not deal all five cards at once. In these cases, players may be left holding only two or three cards and can chase the draw to complete their hand.

Draw poker

Draw poker is the most basic variation of poker. It is the basis for many video poker games and is often the first variation players learn. This game is commonly played at home but is rarely played at casinos or in tournaments.

Stud poker

Stud poker is a limited game, played on a table with five or six players. In this game, players put in an ante, or small wager, before the hand begins. The ante is usually a fraction of the total bet. During a hand, each player is dealt two cards, one face up and one face down. The dealer begins with the player on his left. The dealer deals each player a face down card and one face up card, and the player with the highest hand wins the pot.
